Pros

  • Feature-rich interface is immediately accessible
  • Smartly laid out with drop-down menu at the top and navigation panel on the right
  • Center panel opens respective boxes in which to enter details
  • Quickly access any element of your story and add or edit anything
  • Database tools capable of replacing the story board concept
  • Helps authors to be more organized with less effort to be more productive

Cons

  • Absence of a story board concept that may be as large as a wall - a means for one or more persons to see all aspects of a story in a glance. The giant story board is also the quickest way for collaboration to see concept and share input.

A software application for authors called StoryBook provides an alternative to notebooks and index cards for laying out a basic premise. It develops some or many threads within a story line. Moreover, it is useful for fleshing out the characters with all their traits and characteristics, births, deaths and timing as to when and how they appear in a story. It is an impressive organizational tool that allows for all the ideas and thoughts to pour out. You can then sort and organize these thoughts at a later time. This application saves time and reduces the struggling in putting forth complex structures in a comprehensive story. It is useful whether planning out a novel or just a short story.

Just Try It Out and See

There is hardly a writer who can open the StoryBook application tools and not have the bounty of ideas start filling up the variety of elements within a story. There are designated places to unload ideas, build characters, layout plots, create story lines, elaborate on locations, scenes, chapters, strands and more. It beats jotting down ideas as they come to you on bits of paper, napkins or whatever you have at a moment when a thought materializes and begs for release before it is lost to the many fluid ideas that may come to a writer.

The Magic is in the Manipulation

StoryBook is a dynamic database program. The magic of its power is fully experienced when you use the software to check out every aspect of your story that it holds in a variety of formats. You can navigate through the data to refer to the task list, go to chapters or go to dates. Every character added is recorded by date and pertinent details so you can see determine when their appearance should occur and how. Manage parts, chapters and scenes and take a chronological or book view of your story. You can relate appearance of elements by scene or date or the usage of strands by date. There is even a Gantt chart for characters that displays start and finish dates and a summary of the elements.
